Executive Director & Board of Directors
Tommy Screen, Executive Director
Tommy Screen has had more than a quarter of a century experience in Louisiana politics. He was just five years old when his late father, Pat Screen, was elected mayor of Baton Rouge, and he spent his childhood summers following his dad around City Hall.
Recognizing the scrutiny under which elected officials and their families have to live, Screen decided to pursue a political career behind the scenes instead of one in the spotlight.
That pursuit began almost as soon as he graduated from Baton Rouge’s Catholic High School. The summer before starting college, he did a six-week internship in James Carville’s office in Washington D.C. It was the early months of the new Clinton administration and an exciting time to be in the nation’s capital.
Soon after passing the Louisiana bar exam in 2001, Screen immediately returned to Washington and worked for Sen. John Breaux, first as a legislative correspondent and then as a legislative assistant.
After Senator Breaux retired in 2005, Screen came back to Louisiana and took a position at Loyola University as director of governmental relations. Familiar with the ins and outs of the legislative process, he was effective in helping the University secure federal relief funds in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to his government relations role, Screen served as General Counsel for the university from 2016-2021.
After serving for three years as the General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer for the University of Arizona Global Campus, Screen took a position as a partner with the law firm of Hogan Marren Babbo & Rose, Ltd, in August of 2024.
Finally, Screen was selected as the Institute of Politics’ third Executive Director in 2008 and has led the IOP since that time.
A 1997 graduate of Louisiana State University, Screen also received his law degree from the LSU’s Paul M. Hebert Law School in 2001. He and his wife Adrienne have two children, McCall and Molly, and live in New Orleans.
